My SRP 2014 – June 27

Plug your ears!It was another fun week of Summer Reading Program! This week, I visited Florence Branch for the CAPOW (Chemistry and Physics on Wheels) Science Show conducted through UNO‘s Physics Department. I wasn’t sure what to expect, but knew that this program would tie in perfectly with the Summer Reading Program’s Fizz, Boom, Read! theme. The hour-long program turned out to be a good mix of learning about chemical reactions and the properties of different chemicals and elements, along with many things that fizzed and boomed – so loudly at times that most people in attendance were poised to plug their ears at any given time. That wasn’t all! Our presenter, Dr. Dan Sullivan, peppered in some life lessons as well. It felt akin to sitting down with one’s grandfather to hear him talk about why peer pressure is bad, why we should always wear our seatbelts, and how to properly court a potential romantic partner when the time came. I believe the average age range in the room was somewhere between 3-8 years old, so I am pretty sure that last message may have sailed right over their heads… not unlike some of the other items used in science demonstrations! If you missed this CAPOW program, catch the next one at South Omaha Library on July 3, 1:30 p.m. Learn a little about how different fireworks colors are created just in time for the 4th of July!
