June 17 landed me at Willa Cather Branch for Jeff Quinn‘s magic show. Jeff Quinn has done magic during Omaha Public Library‘s Summer Reading Program for several years, but this is the first time I have had the pleasure of sitting through an entire show. One thing is obvious before he even gets started – this show is VERY popular. The room was packed and kids scrunched together to get a seat. I wove my way through the crowd so I would be able to take pictures of the show.
The audience was mostly young girls, due to a couple of nearby girls organizations who attend events at Willa Cather Branch. Quinn noticed this and took the opportunity to promote a book about the inventions that women have come up with as solutions to everyday problems through the years, Girls Think of Everything by Catherine Thimmish. The book shares stories from the inventors of everything from Kevlar to chocolate chip cookies!
All of the magic tricks were science focused, like the Fizz, Boom Read! theme of Summer Reading Program. Participants from the audience helped to show how the human body can be used to conduct an energy stream, how the iron in our blood can be magnetized, and one lucky lady assisted Quinn in assembling a Frankenstein! Did you know that Mary Shelley wrote Frankenstein at just 19 years old? Just a fun fact I learned during the magic show! Don’t worry if you missed this show. There are still a few others that you can attend this summer, or if you liked it so much the first time that you’d like to attend again! 😉 Check out more photos from this fun event on OPL’s Flickr page.
