5 Questions with: Isa Chandra Moskowitz [author & vegan cooking expert]

Isa Chandra Moskowitz at OPL Culinary Conference in November 2012

More than 100 people attended Omaha Public Library’s second annual Read it & Eat Culinary Conference last month at W. Dale Clark (Main) Library. The menu of events included a panel discussion, food demonstrations, and presentation on healthful eating. Audience members had a chance to sample vegan waffles (among other things), whipped up during a food demo by Brooklyn-raised and Omaha-based author, blogger and vegan baker Isa Chandra Moskowitz.

Isa Chandra’s popular blog Post Punk Kitchen has over 43,000 “Likes” on Facebook and 21,000 Twitter followers, so OPL is in good company trying out her recipes. Her most recent book is Vegan Pie in the Sky, released late last year.

This lover of vegan cooking took a quick break during her West Coast travels to answer five questions that we know her fans will enjoy reading!

1)          How would you describe Omaha?

Laid back with enclaves of cool and loads of potential.

2)          What is your all-time favorite cookbook?

Probably The Voluptuous Vegan. It’s not a beautiful book, but the recipes are creative, delicious and reliable. I hope someday there is a hardcover full color edition!

3)          Which five (separate) words would you use to describe Post Punk Kitchen?

Post. Punk. Kitchen. Rules. All. Just kidding! I can tell you what I try to make it: Fun, Informative, Innovative, Cozy and Delicious.

4)          A writer/baker/cook/photographer/blogger needs inspiration. Where do you find yours?

Everywhere! In a very practical sense, I watch Food Network and read magazines and cookbooks and riff off whatever inspires me. I also travel a lot and try to recreate yummy stuff I eat at restaurants. And sometimes I just dream something up. You get a craving for something, and imagine how flavors will work together, and just go for it. Lastly (and maybe this is what happens most often), I just rummage around my fridge and pantry and figure out what to make.

5)          What’s on tap for the future for you and PPK?

I have a new book coming out in the fall called Isa Does It. It will be my first full-color hardcover coffee table-type cookbook and I am very excited for it!
