Take A Page – Gary Katz

Every other week, Omaha Public Library shares what its patrons are reading with the Omaha World-Herald.

This week, Gary Katz, supervisor of the Metropolitan Community College South Omaha Library, shares his five recommended fiction and classic novels.

1. “1Q84” by Haruki Murakami
“This book is full of suspense, sci-fi and deep, descriptive language. Murakami is the best author out there today!”

2. “Tortilla Flat” by John Steinbeck
“This book is filled with warmth and humor. A gentle story about men who dream for more.”

3. “Garcia: An American Life” by Blair Jackson
“Superbly written biography of the Grateful Dead’s leader (the late Jerry Garcia). Full of rich anecdotes and insights.”

4. “A Stranger on the Planet” by Adam Schwartz
“A funny novel about an English professor who cannot find his way in life. His family is dysfunctional and hilarious.”

5. The Collected Stories of Isaac Bashevis Singer
“I.B. Singer, Nobel Prize winner, is the master of the Jewish story. Full of demons, doppelgangers, spirits and New Yorkers, Singer captures a flavor of what drives people — whether it’s love or greed. Great stories.”
